“Why do we have to take SBACs?” This is a common question asked by students. Many argue that test scores are not always an accurate measure of their academic ability;  nor is it always an accurate predictor of student success. However, testing is a way of life. Students have to pass a test to get their driver’s license, they have to pass a test to get into college, and, as adults, they often have to pass a test to get a job.

One of the main goals of SBAC tests (the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) is to provide accurate and timely measures of student growth in English Language Arts and mathematics. The scores also provide data to teachers and schools to improve instruction and support student success, especially in preparation for college and careers.

So why not begin preparing our students to show their academic achievement by emphasizing the importance of these tests and the role they play in their education? Parents, as we begin SBAC testing next week, please work with us to encourage your children to give each test their best effort because that is the most important part of the process. When students try their best, they will be amazed at what they can accomplish.
