The Power of Being Prepared

I think it’s safe to assume that we all like to be successful. As adults, we know that success just doesn’t happen. It is something that requires a plan, and a plan requires preparation.

Although some of you may be blessed with those organized children who plan better than most adults, some of us aren’t. If only we could convince our children how important it is to be prepared.

As Alexander Graham Bell said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” Being prepared can change our day from a series of stressful mishaps to calmness and productivity. Being prepared gives us the opportunity to succeed in accomplishing our goals.

Now, all we have to do is convince our children that they can be more successful if they come to school prepared each day. Walking into their classes on time with a charged Chromebook, school supplies, and their IDs and lanyards allows students to begin each class on a positive note. It allows them to keep up with instruction, complete assignments, and score higher on assessments.

But, most importantly, students will see first-hand that the rewards of proper preparation is success.

Events & Honors:

Spelling Bee Semifinalists: Congratulations to 7th grader Julien Lingat and 8th grader Red Raven Vales for advancing to the semifinal round of the Clark County School District Spelling Bee! Julien and Red both placed in the top 15 spellers in their respective grade levels across the entire school district, and will participate in the semifinal round, which will be filmed at KLVX PBS Channel 10 on Wednesday, November 15. We are extremely proud of you!

Sea Camp: GJHS is going to Sea Camp San Diego March 22-24, 2024! The time has finally arrived! It is now time to complete your eligibility forms for the Sea Camp field trip. You will need to get a behavior clearance from the Student Success Center and a grade clearance from the Registrar before making your $75 non-refundable payment with the banker. Once this is completed, you will need to visit the science teachers before school in the 100's hallway on Thursday, October 19th. You will then be approved to fill out your registration forms with Sea Camp and to confirm your place as there are only 50 seats available. See your science teacher for a packet if you need one. Check out seacamp.com!

Dolphin Sticker: We are so excited to announce the return of the Dolphin Sticker! These are awarded to all students with Straight Os for the first quarter grading cycle. These allow students privileges such as the Straight O lunch, a special treat, and going to sporting events without a parent present. We congratulate these students and are so very proud of you.

A reminder for students without dolphin stickers: you must have a parent present to attend all Greenspun sporting events. Thank you for your cooperation.

PSAT testing: Eighth graders will take the PSAT 8/9 on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. This year, the College Board implemented a mandatory Digital Readiness Check to familiarize eighth-grade students with the Bluebook testing application, confirm their personal information, and verify that Chromebooks are ready for the test day.

The Digital Readiness Check will be on Monday, October 16, during the first-period class and should only take 30 minutes.

The school will not participate in a modified bell schedule on both days. However, we will have a grade-level lunch on October 18, PSAT 8/9 test day. Please review the lunch schedule:

  • 1st lunch - 7th graders

  • 2nd lunch - 8th graders

  • 3rd lunch - 6th graders

SECTA has partnered with Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department of the Clark County School District to promote #GirlsinSTEM, an event providing middle school girls with technology and STEM experiences as they relate to current in-demand careers in Nevada. Participants will explore a variety of technology related career opportunities such as graphic design, information technology management, digital photography, engineering, animation, and more. Students will attend these sessions and participate in hands-on activities to help build their confidence and familiarity with technology and STEM careers. Lunch will also be provided for the students. This event will take place on November 17, 2023, from approximately 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at SECTA High School. If you are interested please contact the 8th Grade Counselor at murdon@nv.ccsd.net. We will be limited to 30 students, so participation will be based on order of students’ response.

Artist Spotlight: Discovering Surrealist Art In our exciting journey through art history, students delved into the captivating world of Surrealism, a prominent art movement of the 20th century. With the goal of accurately describing three key facts about this influential movement, our budding artists explored the dreamlike, fantastical works of Surrealist artists. They delved into the realm of LINE and SHAPE, mastering the art of sketching composite animals comprised of two distinct creatures. The use of CROSS-HATCHING added depth, IMPLIED TEXTURE, and CONTRAST to their creations. Moreover, students embarked on a COLLAGE adventure, learning to cut and arrange various elements of their compositions to achieve BALANCE and bring their surreal visions to life. Through this exploration, our students have gained valuable insights into Surrealism's unique characteristics, enhancing their artistic skills and creativity.
