Principal's Message
Bicycle Safety
Parents, please remind your children how important it is to follow bicycle safety rules. Oftentimes, I think that students are clueless to the dangers of reckless bike riding.
When I see or hear that students are riding recklessly, I will remind them that a bicycle is a vehicle, and they are the drivers so they have to follow traffic rules. And then I will make a phone call home so you can reiterate the same message.
Please, please, please encourage your children to obey all traffic regulations when riding to and from school. If they are not sure what those regulations are, I have included a list of common road rules from https://kidshealth.org/ that you can review with your teens.
What Road Rules Should I Know?
Always ride with your hands on the handlebars.
Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving a driveway, an alley, or a curb.
Cross at intersections. When you pull out between parked cars, drivers can't see you coming.
Walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals.
Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars do.
Use bike lanes wherever you can.
Don't ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly.
Stop at all stop signs and obey traffic (red) lights just as cars do.
Ride single-file on the street with friends.
When passing other bikers or people on the street, always pass to their left side, and call out "On your left!" so they know that you are coming.
Most importantly, we must continue to remind our children that riding a bike is a responsibility they need to take seriously because their safety is our number one priority.
